Frequently Asked Questions |

Q:
|
I have never purchased orchids by mail
order and I don't know Bloomfield Orchids. How do I know you are a reputable
company?
|
A:
|
Check with your orchid
friends to see if they have purchased from mail order orchid companies. Also ask
your orchid friends if they, or someone they know, has purchased orchids from us.
Another good source of information is the orchid society in your area or the American
Orchid Society located in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Q:
|
What temperature do I need to maintain to
grow paphs and phrags? (You will hear "orchidists" refer to these species as
"slipper" orchids.)
|
A:
|
These varieties of orchids
grow well at the temperatures that you enjoy--60º F to 85º F. The temperature during the
day is the high range (does not have to be 85º F). At night the temperature should
drop by 8º to 10º F. |
Q: |
How often do I water my slipper orchids? |
A:
|
Paphs should be grown evenly moist.
A good way to gauge this is to feel the weight of the pot right after watering.
Each day check the weight of the pot. When the pot becomes light, it is time to
water. Phrags should be grown wet.
They should be watered more often through the growing season. They require less water in
the "winter" season. We water ours every other day. |

Q:
|
Do I need to fertilize orchids? |
A:
|
Orchid plants will grow and
flower much better if fertilized. Fertilizing twice a month is good; once a week is
even better. There are many fertilizers available. Avoid fertilizers
that contain urea as a nitrogen source. The fertilizer
we use and sell is one the best that we have found. |
